An Eye-full of the London Olympics

The London Eye celebrates Olympic Handover

London, 21 August 2008

This Bank Holiday weekend, the world will watch as Beijing hands over the Olympic flag to London. One of the capital’s most iconic landmarks, the London Eye, will be joining in the celebrations, turning their lights red, white and blue to represent the colours of the Union Jack and to launch the nation’s countdown to the 2012 games.

The London Eye will repeat a sequence of festive colours throughout the weekend, with special effects showing the colours not only changing but also moving in different directions. Furthermore, at the turn of every hour the wheel will sparkle gold in recognition of the fantastic success of the British Olympic team in Beijing.

The Union Jack themed wheel will allow visitors to the London Eye to partake in these unique celebrations honouring the Olympic Games handover, whilst also enjoying the panoramic views of the next Games’ host city. The wheel will remain lit up from dusk on Friday 22nd August to Monday 25th August, 2008.

David Sharpe, Managing Director of the London Eye comments,

“The Olympic handover this Bank Holiday weekend will be a special and memorable moment for the whole country, but especially for London. As one of the UK’s most iconic 21st century landmarks, we are delighted that the London Eye can be part of the celebrations and offer visitors an opportunity to join in with the festivities.”
