London from the inside Monday 16th January - Sunday 22nd January 2017

“Is January really not finished yet?” we hear you cry! No, but the 16th is January hump day, but it’s also officially the most depressing day of the year. Let’s try and combat that with as much comedy as we can possibly cram into one blog and get London laughing it’s way through the rest of the first month of the year.

LET’S START WITH A JOKE!

An Alsatian went to a telegram office and wrote: "Woof. Woof. Woof. Woof. Woof. Woof. Woof. Woof. Woof."

The clerk examined the paper and told the dog: "There are only nine words here. You could send another 'Woof' for the same price."

"But," the dog replied, "that would make no sense at all."

EYE ON… RICHMOND-UPON-THAMES

There are 32 capsules on The Coca-Cola London Eye, representing the 32 London boroughs, so each week we explore a different London borough.

A not-too-shabby borough home to Richmond, Twickenham, Hampton and Teddington - the rugger lot, celebrities, M&S Simply Foods and yummy mummies galore. A great deal of the borough is taken up by green spaces (over 100 parks actually) including Kew Gardens, Bushy Park, Richmond Park (FENTON!), Hampton Court Park and the WWT London Wetlands Centre. It’s the home of England Rugby and the most famous rugby pub in the world - The Cabbage Patch, as well as a world class comedy club…

  • The Bearcat Comedy Club at the Turk’s Head has been going for over 30 years founded by James Punnett (real name) and Grahame Limmer.
  • A favourite with many comedians, acts that have played there have included Bill Bailey, Lee Evans, Jo Brand and Steve Coogan.
  • Bearcat is an anagram of cabaret.
ON THIS DAY… 17th JANUARY 1983

The BBC launched it’s first ever breakfast news programme starting at 6.30am for two and a half hours a day. Nick Ross presented it with Frank Bough and Selina Scott reading the news, Russell Grant was resident astrologer and Diana Moran did the exercise slot. TV critics at the time said that there was no demand for this type of show.

Number one on this day: Phil Collins, You Can’t Hurry Love

If you’re coming to visit us in January please bear in mind we’ll be shut for our annual maintenance from 9th-24th January (inclusive) but the River Cruise will still be open.
