- Thursday November 17th 2016
- Press Release
New statistics published today by the Office of National Statistics will show cancer is still the biggest killer in England and Wales. Throughout the week BBC Breakfast will be looking at the latest research and treatment, and raising awareness of how to prevent it and improve survival rates.
On the evening of the 17th November the London Eye will be lighting up to show their support of the week. Other landmarks taking part include Belfast City Hall, SSE Hydro Arena Glasgow, Gateshead Millennium Bridge, First Direct Arena Leeds, Liverpool Town Hall, Port of Liverpool Building, Blackpool Tower, Wales Millennium Centre, Gloucester Cathedral, BT Tower London and Edinburgh Castle.
All the BBC Breakfast presenters will be involved; Dan Walker will highlight the latest statistics via huge projections onto BBC buildings in Salford, Naga Munchetty has made a film with her Strictly co-star Anastacia on the latest genetic research to improve breast cancer survival, and Graham Satchell has spoken to broadcaster Steve Hewlett and the BBC’s Nick Robinson about their own diagnoses of cancer and the impact of the disease on men.
Dan Walker, Breakfast presenter says: "This is a huge week for us on BBC Breakfast. Cancer is something which affects so many individuals and families across the UK. We know early diagnosis is key to survival so we hope to raise awareness throughout the week and show viewers how to reduce the risk. We’ll hear from some amazing people who have a wealth of advice and insight to share."
All week BBC Breakfast will be joined by experts, patients, survivors and families to talk about their experiences, share stories and look at pioneering techniques. BBC Breakfast’s Shine a Light on Cancer series will be on BBC One 6-9.15am every Mon to Fri this week.
